Introduction 介绍
God love you and your family.

God love your children, father and mother and me.

God has amazing plans for us, and our family.

The plan is about love and blessing of God.

God want to love and blessing us.

So God gave us his only begotten Son, Jesus Christ.

If we believe in Jesus Christ we have everlasting life and take the authority to become the son of God.

That is the greatest blessing of God in this world.

The blessing of God is to get eternal life.

The eternal life is to live in heaven with God forever.

And we live with God on the earth, that is the greatest blessing of God.

Even though we live with God and in God we meet the difficult situation.

For example, frustrations, hardships, failure, sickness.

So Jesus teaches us.

When you meet difficult situation or problems, ask me and then I will help you, and I will guide you and I will solve your all problems and you will get peace and happy in God.

Jesus said through Bible follow my steps and my word.

So I will introduce about Jesus’ custom of prayer to all of you.

That will be help to your life of faith and the growth of faith.

I hope that this time is the greatest time for you.
Those who love God love the early morning, because God like early morning.

Since God dwells in quiet and secret place and speaks quietly, 因为神在安静和隱密的地方住,用微小的聲音說話,those who want to meet God seek the quiet time and secret place.

Jesus also went to secret place early in the morning and prayed.

Jesus is the Lord of Dawn and the Lord of Dawn Prayer.

The typical tradition of Korean Church that is not found in other countries in the world is    the Early Morning Prayer Meeting.

The Korean Church was planted and grew up through the dawn prayer meeting.

Furthermore, the dawn prayer meeting contributed to the founding of the nation and its economic growth.

However, one of the main reasons for the decline of the Church in these days can be found in the decline of dawn prayer meeting.

Therefore, it is necessary to establish the theology of dawn prayer and apply it to the gospel ministry as well as to the individual Christian life.

As I think of this subject, I found it is best to learn from the early morning prayer of Jesus.

This led me to begin my preaching from Jesus.

1. Jesus, Seeking God in the Early Morning.

According to the text, Jesus got up early in the morning.

He rose up in the morning while it was still dark.

“Early in the morning” or “dawn” is regarded as important time in the Bible.

For the people of Israel a day begins from the evening and ends at the sunset (Jer. 23:32; Neh13:9).

This led them to think that a morning is a breaking the night.

The night shuts the sun and stops all the activities of life, but morning lets the all creatures begin to work with the rising sun.

However, the morning does not come by itself.

The sun does not arise by his power.

Amos 5:8 says, 阿摩司书5:8说:“ He who made the Pleiades and Orion, and turns the deep darkness into the morning and darkens the day into night, who calls for the waters of the sea and pours them out on the surface of the earth, the Lord is his name.”

According to Amos the Lord is the one who turns the darkness into the morning.

The Lord is the Lord of Morning and Evening, controlling the border of time as well as the length of day and night.

And it also means that the Lord’s gracious providential activity is manifested in the morning in many cases.

Jeremiah said that “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end.

They are new every morning, great is your faithfulness.”(Lam. 3:22-23).

Even in the fall of the nation and his kings’ being broken, Jeremiah said that the Lord did not stop showing his steadfast love and mercy every morning.

And Zephaniah said the Lord shows forth his justice every morning. (Zeph. 3:5).

According these witnesses the morning is the best time to recognize and experience most keenly the hand of his providential love.

The Lord is the God of working in the morning.

The Lord threw the Egyptian forces of Pharaoh into the midst of the sea in the morning     (Ex. 14:24) .

The Lord gave manna to the people of Israel in the morning before the sunrise at the         wilderness (Ex16:21).

The Lord made covenant with his people on the mountain of Sinai early in the morning    (Ex. 24:4).

The Lord began his war of the Conquest against Jericho early in the morning    (Josh. 6:12, 15).

The Lord conducted the war against Moab for Jehoshaphat early in the morning at Tekoa (2 Ch.20:20).

Even the judgment of God on the Sodom and Gomorrah was poured out at dawn  (Gn. 19:23-28).

In Jeremiah’s preaching at the temple, the Lord spoke to Israel to rise up early but they did not hear.

The Lord is the one who speaks to his people early in the morning and teach them.

So the Lord was, the people of Israel also got up early in the morning and waited for him to meet him.

Jesus got up early in the morning.

The previous verses of the text tell us that the evening at sundown people brought to him all who were sick or oppressed by demons and the whole city was gathered at the door.

Jesus healed them and casted out many demons.

Jesus worked until late at night to be tired.

However, he got up early in the morning when it was still very dark.

In the Proverb, poverty will come upon to the sluggard lying in the bed and saying,

“A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest.” (Prov. 6:9-11)

and he is inferior to the ant.

The people of God rise up early in the morning and prepare for the days of sweaty work (Prov. 31:15).

Anyone who longs for the grace of God must go before his presence who works in the       early morning.

Jesus got up early in the morning and went to a quiet place.

Jesus went out from the inhabitant place to a desolate and quiet place.

He could have prayed and worshiped God in his bed room, but he went out to a lonely place alone.

He taught his disciples how to pray in the Sermon on the Mount as this:

“When you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.”

According to his teaching, God is the one who is in secret.

Thus he exhorted them to go into the upper room and (Korean translation) shut the door  to pray to God the Father who sees in secret.

Jesus’ belief and conviction about early morning prayer was to go to the quiet place and meet God who sees in secret.

That led Jesus to seek the solitary place by himself.

The wilderness at the dawn of sunrise is the best place to listen to the Word of God and to pour out our heart to him.

God is the God of omnipresence.

Therefore, we can meet him walking on the street or even in the subway.

The problem is that our eyes and ears can not be concentrated on God because of noise and surrounding things of the cities.

It is a proper manner for us to seek the quiet place for the prayer that cannot be interrupted by the worldly noise.

While we are praying, we can not receive the telephone simultaneously. Jesus went to the wilderness to meet God.

He worked late at night but he got up early in the morning and did not meet any other man prior to God, the Father, 祂作工到深夜,但他清晨早起, 并没有在朝見父神之前見其他人,as if a child seeks first his mother after getting out of bed.

Jesus, Having Communion with God in the Morning

Jesus’ purpose to go out to the lonely place early in the morning was to pray.

Prayer is a meeting with God and having communion with Him.

In prayer we meet him, listen to his voice, and pour out our heart to make ourselves known to him.

This leads us to say that the prayer is a dialogue with God.

The dialogue is the most important element in communion.

Through communion we come to share ourselves with each other and make our friendly relationship developed and accumulated.

Without communion, no affection is found.

The relationship without communion is dead relationship.

We human being is created to have communion with God.

God made man to have relationship with him.

In Eden God made Adam to respond to him when he called him.

Man is not created to support himself.

Man was created to have relationship with God, the source of life and supported by him all the necessary elements and resources to maintain his life.

It is like a tree receiving water and nourishment from the roots to bloom and produces its fruits.

However, unfortunately men cut the rope of relationship and departed from him and stop the communion.

He chose death instead of life. The core of communion is a dialogue.

For dialogue listening carefully the talk of his counterpart is more important than talking to him.

Listening to the Word of God is also important in the communion with him.

One of the main reasons to seek the quiet place in the morning is to listen to the Word of God carefully.

If the one side talk is a dialogue with God, there will be no need to find a quiet place to pray to God.

Since the Lord is the God of omniscience and omnipresence, he has a power to listen and   discern what we are saying even in the market places.

The key point of prayer is to listen carefully to the Word of God.

Jesus said, “I gave them the Words that you gave me.”(John 17:8).

When God gave him the Word to Jesus?

If we say in human way, it might be during the time of prayer.

Not only he received the Word from God, but also he wants his disciple to ask God what they need.

Thus he taught them how to pray.

It is also necessary for us to learn how to go before the Lord with a proper manner.

We need to be dressed up to meet the King and we need to use the noble speech with the learned style.

It is naïve to keep demanding.

Jesus seemed to wash his and be dressed up to meet the Father and knelt down in his presence.

The communion is a bilateral dialogue.

One must speak and express himself as he listens to his counterpart.

It is not personal and normal relationship only to listen and not to open his heart.

Likewise we also should open our mind and talk whatever we want him known and ask what we want from him.

Hannah told she pour out her soul before the Lord when she asked to stop drinking wine by Eli, the priest of the Lord who misunderstood her to be drunkard.

Here As if one pours out water on the ground, she poured her soul before the Lord.

Hannah poured out her affliction, frustration, sorrow and bitterness before the Lord.

She did not pour it on her husband but on the Lord.

We cannot pray to anyone.

We can pray only to God who can understand our situation and has power to help us in need.

In spite of the love, comfort and encouragement of her husband, Hannah could not be satisfied, because he did not have an ability or power to solve her fundamental problems.

However, God can do it.

God can do it because he is omniscience and omnipotent.

Since we have this faith, early in the morning we can go to him and pour out our heart and confess our love and ask his help.

It is not written in the text what did Jesus hear and what did he ask to God.

But the following event suggests us that Jesus talked very important things with God.

Jesus, Confirming His Mission Through the Early Morning Prayer.

Jesus’ gospel ministry seemed to be successful from the beginning.

In Capernaum Jesus took an opportunity for honor and rich because many people crowded around him from early in the morning.

However, this success brought him a danger against his ministry.

He had to choose one on the crossway between the way of medical doctor and that of preacher of gospel.

As a medical doctor he will be famous soon.

His rich and glorious future will be secured in one place.

However, the affliction and suffering are waiting for the life of itinerary preacher.

At this point Jesus chose the way of cross after the early morning prayer.

Jesus healed the sick until late at night, but many people gathered around him again from the early morning.

They were miserable people that Jesus could never desert.

If Jesus helps them, it will be the more good opportunity for him to get more fame.

However, it seems to be a time of agony for Jesus.

At this moment Jesus went out to the quiet place in the morning and meet God.

Jesus confirmed his task on earth through the communion with God.

Jesus said to his disciples waiting him to heal the sick ,

“Let us go on to the next towns, that I may preach there also, for that is why I came out.”(Mk 1:38).

Here Jesus makes his task and mission on earth clear. It will be meaningful to help those poor and sick people to live a happy life.

That would lead him also to the meaningful life with respect and affection from others.

He could enjoy the typical life of ordinary people.

In that case he will have no need to wander around the every city of Palestine in order to preach the Word of God.

There will be no affliction and persecution because of his ministry.

But he did not choose that easy way.

Jesus did not choose the way of pleasing man and the way of self-securing, 耶稣并没有选择讨人喜欢的方式,保護自我安全的方式,but he chose the way of God, the way of mission,     但他选择了上帝的方式,使命的方式, and the way of preaching the Word of God through bearing the cross.

He chose the life of mission, rather than the life of ordinary man.

He saw the pity people before him now, but he saw further the people who are in need of the Word of God in the future.

He found the historical and worldwide task through the dawn prayer.
There are many reasons for us to have time to pray in the morning.

There are so many things waiting for our decisions to be made.

God is controlling our life.

We cannot live without his guidance and help constantly.

We have to make decision for the marriage, getting a job, choosing the college, etc.

At that time we must seek God in a quiet time at a quiet place.

Even though we know which way should be chosen, and we have enough ability and power to do, 尽管我们知道应选择哪种方式,我们有足够的能力和权柄选择去做,we must seek God and let him know it and ask his help and guidance.

By doing this, we show our respect and fear of him.

If not, it will be a despising and disregarding him as a controller of our life, the Lord of providence.

The Bible says for this kind of people as a scoffer (Ps.1:1).

He does not recognize God as the Lord of controlling the entire world.

If anyone is Christian, he must live in the presence of God and ask the way of him and make a decision according to his   will.

Jesus sought God in the early in the morning and confirmed his mission on earth and made the decision of his way to go.

Jesus, Leaving the Sick Behind in the Early Morning

Jesus did not go to the sick waiting for him after the prayer.

He said, “Let us go on to the next towns, that I may preach there also, for that is why I came out.”(Mk 1:38)“耶穌對他們說、我們可以往別處去、到鄰近的鄉村、我也好在那裡傳道.

And in verse 39 Jesus actually went throughout all Galilee preaching in their synagogues and casting out demons.

After the morning prayer he left Capernaum and went to the neighbor towns.

This image and attitude of Jesus seem to be like a cold man, a man of heartless and merciless.

Obviously these people needed his touches of merciful hands and they came early in the morning before the daybreak.

But Jesus left them behind, because he wanted to proclaim his gospel in other cities too.

He wanted to do his task of preacher from God.

The sick might have been very disappointed at his leaving.

Jesus might also have been very distressing to leave them.

It might not be easy for him to leave the people without giving them any help.

He left them to go forward to the way of God given task controlling his heart.

For this decision and practical action, he might need a particular courage and power for such a man like Jesus who was full of love, pity, and mercy.

We can guess that Jesus was bestowed the power and courage for decision through the morning prayer.

Thus, the hour of prayer is the hour of decision and also is the hour of empowering to control his heart and mind.

Jacob was named Israel after the wrestling with God at the riverbank of Jabbok in the       morning.

He was afraid of meeting his brother Esau because of his sins against him 20 years ago.

Before he meets Esau, he met God and wrestled with him all through the night. At dawn Jacob became Israel.

Jacob became different.

Later He said to his brother,

“For I have seen your face, which is like seeing the face of God, and you have accepted me.”(Gen. 33:10).

And he offered his blessing to Esau,

“Please accept my blessing that is brought to you.” (Gen. 33:11).

Jacob experienced his change of name and personality through meeting of God at the river.

He gave his blessing to his brother as the successor of Abraham and Isaac.

No fear is found in him.

He looks like the general who is returning from the battlefield with his victory and he was like a rising sun in the morning.

He is no more a coward trembling with fear on the bank of the river Jabbok.

Peter denied Jesus three times before a girl of the high priest and run away when his         master was in trial and crucifixion.

He returned to his old job of fishing of fish.

He was spending the days of frustration and disappointment.

However, Peter and his friends met Jesus again in the morning.

They ate together with Jesus and had the communion on the shore.

They talked about their task, their ministry of the Word with Jesus.

Peter found again his task of gospel ministry and came back to Jerusalem.

After meeting Jesus in the early morning, they came back to the land of mission and          accomplished it with courage and power.

Clearly, the morning prayer provides us the wisdom, courage, and power to work for the decision made by faith.

Conclusion 结论
Up until now we have observed the early morning prayer of Jesus.

Jesus went out to the quiet place early in the morning and prayed to God.

Jesus convinced his task as the preacher of the Word of God and courageously left the sick of Capernaum waiting for his touch of  gracious hand.

He then preached the gospel all throughout Galilee.

The Lord is the God of working early in the morning.

Jesus also began his ministerial work by praying in the early morning.

In his prayer, he confirmed the historical and worldwide redemptive vision of God and was provided with his courage and power.

Likewise, we, the follower of his footprints, also need to pray at a quiet place early in the morning.

Many of the godly men seek the quiet place in the morning to meet the Lord.

A Psalmist said, “I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his Word I hope, my soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen for the morning, more than watchmen for the morning.” (Ps 130:5-6).

David also prayed in the morning,

“Give attention to the sound of cry, my king and my God, for you do I pray.    O Lord, in the morning you hear my voice, in the morning I prepare a sacrifice for you and watch.” (Ps.5:1-3).

David cried to the King to hear him in the morning.

And he also believed that the Lord accepted his prayer in morning and said,

“But I, O Lord, cry to you in the morning my prayer comes before you.”(Ps. 88: 13).

We are the weak and indispensable to be dependent upon God. At that time we have to cry to the Lord.

In particular, as we begin a new day, before we meet any one else in a day, we must go before God and meet him, and after having communion with him we must begin our work.

That is the way of our saints.

As Jesus did, so do we.* 效法耶稣所行,我们也这样行。*

Myung Sung Presbyterian Church

4:50 am, 6:00 am, 7:20 am, 8:30 am, 10:00 am
